Welcome Spring!

We are enjoying the wonderful rain showers and watching all the flowers spring up.  The cherry tree across the street has been in
bloom for two weeks and the petals are dropping.  Come and join us for activities if you are willing and able.We can't stay inside this time
of year. Look for us in the yard or at the park.

Happy Easter

4-H ClubAnimated Bunny

Board games and wooden egg decoration. The Game of Life is the winning choice.  Pokemon Monopoly was second.  And, DragonFly is third.  The children made this game up and they love to have the time to play it. Magic was fourth choice.  We didn't want to end 4-H club Board Games.  So, we played all day.  Thanks for snacks, V's and the bread was the winner Lisa L.  It was a fun day.
We are going to make Ukrainian eggs for Eater with wax and repeated dyeing of colors. Please get information on egg dye procedures.  Need to do some research on how to do the eggs, do you want to blow the eggs out or use wooden eggs?
The V's have some wonderful ideas and will help us to paint and decorate some fantastic eggs.  Unfortunately, because they might  not be able to make it to 4-H on the 2nd Tuesday and we may played Board games while we talked about preparation of some tools with knives, toothpicks and electrical tape or use some exacto knifes to create tools for this project. I have some beeswax ready to go.
Board games for all. Monopoly, Magic tournament, Boggle, Math Smart and checkers. Chess club for us next year? Or, Friday Magic games for a while?  Alden has us all playing cards.  Some of you have Yu Gi  Oh and Pokemon.
Hollin Hall had wooden eggs this week and you could pick those up.  We can paint with watercolors, use tissue paper or decorate on the second Tuesday.  Bring hard boiled eggs, or blown eggs, some onion skin, beets, tea bags and pens or markers and we will set up different tables with activities.  Moms can help. Come with enthusiasm.

Grist Mill Park Play Group

On Wednesday at 1 Missed the first Wednesday because we had to fix the oven so we can cook again. See you all on the second Wednesday.  Would anyone like to play a basketball game ( older teens against the mothers).  If that sounds lame, forgive me.  It is
your park day and you should be in charge.   Some of the Moms might like to play, too.
We brown bagged lunch one day.  It was cold, but we could meet for a fun day if anyone calls to go over to the playground.

Dandelion Landscape Design project at the homeLizard sticking tongue out

We are going to try to grow grass and checked out books from Sherwood Library to read all about landscape.  We are interested in how to make a flower bed and stop erosion of the hillside where we reside in lovely Mt. Vernon.  And, possibly some pens for ducks and chickens.
Remember to grow one pumpkin or melon apiece this year for 4-H vegetable challenge.
New lawn crew at my house, the boys have priced the mower, the weed zapper and the equipment to start a lawn mowing project.
It's  their business, and they could work for the dough if any of the Dad's get overworked.
We did study up on tree trimming and go attack some tree limbs with energy.

Mt. Vernon Sports Clubblue legg

Sports Information
Contacted Mt. Vernon Sports Club to ask about group sports for us.  They have several plans and we can discuss a swim day, a basketball afternoon or starting a sports day. We could have an active Sports Day next year at least one day a week.

Oleg won a bronze medal in a race.  He came in third in his age division. This was his second race.  It was a 10K.  We are proud of his medal and excited that he loves to run.   He would like to participate in a 1 K and hopes to be the winner.  There are some good runs coming
up.  April 27 is the G.W. Parkway run.

Shakespeare in the Park. Leaves

Did you all like Shakespeare in the Park?
We started reading King Lear and had a great time at Ft. Hunt Park at the Pavilion Stage.  It was a bit chilly.  The sun was shining enough to warm us.
This month, we could finish King Lear and vote on our next play.  Some people want Hamlet.  K wants Oedipus Rex. And, some want star-crossed young love with Romeo and Juliet.
We recorded King Lear and hope to have video of the whole show. Have a nice resin skull as our prop for Hamlet.  Let us know what date would work best.  Choose a Friday and we can return to reading Shakespeare together.

Science Fair coming May 20Rabbits and eggs

We changed the date from April 29th.  Minerals, rocks. time to get those projects in mind. You can make a display and give a talk, or make an interactive exhibit and show your project, or build a kit and give a demonstration.  We like to see your work and a process for the science exhibit. We usually have a longer meeting so each person has time to show their science project and share knowledge.
Teens are you ready to present your projects and show others how the science fair is done? We have lots of fun looking and learning from each person.  And, we have had fun  with physics and Newtonian Fluids.

In the past, we have had some really fine work done with What Floats? What doesn't?from our younger V.  And, everybody loved trying out her experiments.  We had a wonderful robot from N and several fine polymer experiments from V1. You can use a kit or build a solar unit or prepare a short-wave radio.  Radio shack has some kits and my crowd wants to make some stuff.  One V has made a flashlight.  Wire up and surprise us on this date with your project.  Let me know if you need more time and we can move this forward to May.
       Posters are welcome.
Come on over to my house and we will have a Science Fair. Lisa N will be able to join us on that date.  She has some papers to work on and we are so pleased that she will be completing  school.  As home schooling Mothers, we share her joy in a job well done.  Gosh, it is difficult to go back to college and have a goal  like hers. She's in the winners circle.

Idea for an Academy for Next Year

Academy (similar to the co-operative idea ). We could get the older kids together two days a week for teaching them
  • Math,
  • English
  • American Literature.
  • Writing and publishing, girl with baloons
  • public speaking

And whatever during the next year.  We could ask Paul to teach them to put a computer together and somebody could do dissection, not me, or Odyssey of the Mind or Build a robot out of junk, art, teen dance, Board game afternoon, science challenges in chemistry or biology. There are so many subjects that we usually let the older teens study.

We could agree as parents to provide a learning experience and invite others to join us Rent the church or turn a room in my house into the school rooms or go from house to house and give some joint lessons.
We used to have the cooperative learning center when Carol was with us and that was an exciting idea. It would provide some incentive for in depth work with the children in art, math and language.
They get it anyway in 4-H club meetings.
The year goes by so fast and we could add another day.  Let me know.  We always like to talk about ideas to keep the kids involved. We can review the idea when we get together to plan activities.
We meet several times a month and this would add some time away but we could also share our resources and provide some extra to the teens.
