What's happening at our house

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Arithmetic

We're concentrating on the basics at our house. Everyday, a little bit of the top three. Read to one another, write and do math. Join us in reading a book a day. Make a journal and write in it everyday for one week. That's only five pages, better add some art work. Let's show the journals on November 26 at 4-H. We have been drilling multiplication tables with some prizes and we are still doing Basic Math Video with Dr. Siegal from the library. These are the Teaching Corporation tapes. We also like Standard Deviant tapes and television. We watched two foreign language lessons on last Friday.

The idea of locking up television has been interesting, The boys love Animal Planet, History Channel and Discovery. They can't get to much else and are suddenly more learned. I confess to begging that television be unlocked because the log-on keeps being rejected and I can't watch anymore.Mom was weak.

Grist Mill Park

First and Third Wednesday Beautiful fall days with the leaves falling and the sun glistening in the trees. Come and swing and play on the playground. We apologize to new friends who look for us there and didn't see any of us during the rain last month. Come back during November. We are all out enjoying the sunshine. We expect to be there on November 6 and November 20. The rehearsal for the production of Annie, Jr. may interfere. E-Mail if you want to play. Here is a map.

4-H

We were ready to march in the Vienna parade, but it was canceled for safety reasons. On November 12, at 11:00 a.m. we will meet at Old Country Buffet on Route 1 for an eatfest. This is an idea from the Active H'ers for a fun time. Conversation and food. We can ask for nothing better, except clean up by a crew and food for mass consumption. Things the teens know how to do best, eat and run. At least they don't say things like I'm still hungry. We'll call the day before and see if they will seat us all together. Let me know the night before if you are coming. See you there. On November 26, we are talking pumpkin pie making or pumpkin pie eating. I am not adverse to Mrs. Smith, or Pumpkin souffle or the teens cooking one from scratch. At least they can bake a couple while the Cloverbuds make wooden spoon puppets or sock puppets for a Pilgrim Play. We may need some stimulating stories about Pilgrim Life to make up a puppet play on the spot. We will need the usual glue, glue gun, cloth, spoons or socks. Feathers, and froo froo. Don't forget the imaginations. Expect the usual mayhem. We had excellant pumpkin carving and we still had all our finger at the end. We didn't take pictures, but this years crop of carvings was one of the best. Good pumpkin painting, too. Congratulations. Contact Lisa.

Parent Support Group

. Suzanne will be at Sherwood Library to greet and meet anyone who wants to join us at 10:30 on Monday, November 11. If there is a need for someone to talk to a Mom experienced in homeschooling, come to meet me in the children's section where I will be sitting with my sons, if I can get them to sit.

Book Report

Would we like to read some books and make an oral book report to the group? Each person could talk about their favorite book and tell about the author and the time period the book was written. You could choose the theme. You could choose biography or autobiography, science, history, art.Tell me what you think and we will discuss this when we see one another. Kathy used to love Book-It. She read some books she hadn't thought about and had a chance to talk about them with friendly people. It might be interesting to give each child a chance to hone speaking before the group skills, if they want to do this.

Homeschooler Going Away tea party

HOMESCHOOL Open House at Suzanne's Friday, Nov. 8 at 1:00 This tea party will be for Maureen, one of the Founding Mother's of 4-H. She was the first Cloverbud Leader and set the standard high for the program. We'll have some tea and cookies and bid her a fond fare thee well.Come and say thank you. We'll ask Kathy to play the violin a little and anyone who wants to sing can. I'll have some tissues on hand for those who will cry. Oleg is going to pack himself up and mail himself to her new home.

History Classes

Homeschool study of the Revolutionary War commenced with the visit to George Washington's estate. Across the street from where we live, but we have traveled by video to many interesting sights since that day. We are on the fourth video and have had some good times with popcorn, duck petting and pizza parties. We will finish the films this month and are considering an overnight visit to Williamsburg to see some history re-enacted. The Dollar Store next to Old Country Buffet has some tricorn hats and we have purchased some to wear on our trip to identify our group. We will be watching "The Patriot" in three weeks. The next history segment for January will be the Civil War. We are considering some fun battlefield explorations. We may have to plan some adventures like considering the war from different viewpoint of historical figures. If anyone wants to join the video viewing, get in touch. We have had some fun times reading Longfellow's "Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" and Jefferson's Declaration of Independance.Let Lisa or Suzanne know if you are interested. We could build a camera similar to Brady's, make field rations or go to a web site and pretend to be a doctor with what medecine was known during the different wars.

Other Ideas

  • Ft. Belvoir has a seven mile trail past beaver lodges and we are going to explore that. It's close to Accotink. More info when we can explore the trial.
  • River Farm along G.W. Parkway has gardens in the last days of fall. We will be there this month to watch the Potomac. See the planes come down the river and watch goldfish in the garden pond.

Editor's Note

Mt. Vernon Unitarian Church is going to have a Christmas Pageant. An old fashioned kind based on a children's book "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever..." Dec. 15 will be the performance. Anybody who wants to join in this should find their old bathrobes and come on for practice. Two of mine are begging for this.

Annie, Jr. YPT is presenting a homeschooler group with some of our friends in various roles. Eben and Nathan are appearing in major roles. Anna is the apple seller and dancing as one of the mansion staff. November 9,10, 16 and 17. All the kids have been practicing really hard and you'll be surprised at the quality of the performances. We hope to see you at the performances. Please come and support the youth.
